World Alzheimer's Day is observed on 21 September
Alejandro, Enrique, Damián, José Ramón and Paco, users of the Valencia Association of Relatives of Alzheimer's Patients (AFAV), enjoyed the Mestalla Tour at the invitation of Valencia CF and the VCF Foundation as part of the celebration, as every 21 September, of World Alzheimer's Day.
Miguel Tendillo: ‘It is a disease that I am enduring at home because of my mother; we must collaborate with these people, who perhaps go a little unnoticed, but they need a lot of help from the outside. Let's see if science advances and finds something that can allow them to have a dignified life'.
As Ester Recio points out about the visit to the Tour Mestalla, ‘the benefit is immense, as they remember moments they have spent in the stadium with their families; today they have been moved. It is very important to continue to awaken those emotions in them’.
Although Alzheimer's erases memories,’ says Ester, ’with this type of activity we awaken sensations and make them feel important.
AFAV is a non-profit organisation that strives to improve the quality of life of Alzheimer's patients and their families. Founded in 1991, it has almost 3,000 members. Since 1999, it has been declared a Public Utility Institution by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Alzheimer's is a physical and mental degenerative disease that can present itself early and progressively. It affects around 15,000 people in Valencia, 50,000 in the Valencian Community and more than a million in Spain.
It causes personality alteration and deterioration of memory, coordination, intellectual, cognitive and motor functions. In a period of between 7 and 17 years, it leads to total incapacity of the person.
Posit for Alzheimer's
A for Alzheimer's, A for Action' is the slogan on which the Alzheimer's Family Association of Valencia has defined the programme of its annual campaign “A Posit for Alzheimer's” in 2024, which integrates different activities and initiatives on the occasion of World Alzheimer's Day, on 21 September.
The aim is to inform, raise awareness and promote the commitment and involvement of all agents of society and citizenship in improving the welfare and quality of life of people with Alzheimer's and other dementias and their families, through various projects developed in alliance with all individuals, companies, organisations and institutions that wish to do so.
